1. Osthol(C15H16O3) warming the kidney and strengthening Yang
In treating importence and female infertility due to deficiency of the kidney , Osthol(C15H16O3) is often used in combination with drugs for tonifying the kidney and replenishing vital essence such as Semen Cuscutae, Fructus Schisandrae, etc.
2. Osthol(C15H16O3) destroying parasite and relieving itching
Osthol(C15H16O3) can be used to treat trichomonas vaginitis, eczema of scrotu m, rubella, scabies, tinea, cutaneous pruritus, etc. In treating trichomonas vaginalis, streaming method or bathing method can be used by using the decoction of the drug, Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, Pericarpium Zanthoxyli, Radix Stemonae, etc, or 15g of Common cnidium fruit extract(Fructus Cnidii Extract)can be ground into powder with some alum, and the powder is mixed with water, put on gauze and the gauze is inserted into the vagina once a day. In treating pruritus of vulva, 15g of the drug, 3g of alum, 6g of Pericarpium Zanthoxyli and 12g of Cortex Pseudolaricis can be decocted and the decoction is used to wash the local area. In treating itching due to eczema, the drug can be sued in combination with Radix Sophora e Flavescentis, Fructus Kochiae, Rhizoma Atractylodis, etc.
A decoction of Common cnidium fruit(Fructus Cnidii) is a highly effective ant iseptic wash for vaginal itching, yeast infections, parasites, etc.
The drug is used to warm the kidney, to promote virility, to kill parasites; for the treatment of impotence, frigidity, morbid leukorrhea, lumbago, external use for vulvitis, trichomonas vaginitis.
3.Aphrodisiacs–To improve sexual function.
Osthole as happy component and libido stimulator:"We investigated the cavern osal relaxant effect of osthole, a coumarin isolated from Cnidium monnier (L.) Cusson which has been long used in China as a herbal medicine to improve male sexual dysfunction. The data suggested that osthole posseses a relaxant effect on rabbit corpus cavernosal tissues which is attributable to the release of NO from sinusoidal endothelium and to the potentiation of the cGMP and/or cAMP signal mediating relaxation of cavernosal smooth muscle by inhibiting phosphodiesterase". (Corpus cavernosum = one of the columns of erectile tissue forming the dorsum of the penis (one of the two columns of erectile tissue forming the clitoris)).
4.Vasorelaxation.
Osthole."It is concluded that osthole relaxes rat thoracic aorta by virtue o f its Ca(2+)-channel blocking properties and by elevating cGMP levels in vascular smooth muscle".
Osthole caused an inhibition of voltage-dependent L-type Ca(2+) current in a concentration dependent manner. The channel-blocking properties of osthole may,at least in part, contribute to the underlying mechanisms by which it affects neuronal or neuroendocrine function.
5.Anti-inflammatory effects: Osthole and xanthotoxin showed anti-inflammator y activity.
6.Osthol modulates TRH-evoked responses by interacting with the TRH receptor :
The influence of two plant coumarins, osthol and xanthotoxin, on intracellul ar Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) transients evoked by TRH were studied in clonal rat pituitary GH4C1 cells. Osthol, but not xanthotoxin, decreased the TRH-induced transient increase in [Ca2+]i in Fluo-3 loaded cells incubated in Ca(2+)-free buffer. Binding experiments with [3H]TRH showed that osthol decreased the binding of TRH to its receptor, whereas the affinity of the receptor for TRH increased. This resulted in a decreased TRH-evoked production of IP3 in cells treated with osthol, and a decreased mobilization of sequestered calcium. Osthol did not inhibit the release of calcium evoked by exogenous IP3 in permeabilized cells. Furthermore, osthol decreased the uptake of 45Ca2+ in response to high K+. Xanthotoxin had no effects in these experiments. The results show that osthol modulates TRH-evoked responses by interacting with the TRH receptor.
7.Anti-allergic effects:Osthol has anti-allergic effect, inhibits contact de rmatitis induced by 2,4-dinitro-fluorobenzene or picryl chloride |
